Let's create a city from the ground up

- You arrive to Berloduhr, the dwarves’ capital city. There you can see several rock made houses and to the corner what seems to be the marketplace, with an alchemy store, a blacksmith, a tavern and an inn visible from your position. - Doesn’t this place look just like the previous 3 cities we were in? Let’s do the usual then. We go sell our stuff, get a room at the inn and stay the night - And I’ll go look for some church or chapel. There must be one from my god. Maybe you did a ton of work as a DM in your city, but when told to your players they end up feeling like a capital city should have way more (even though you invented like 22 different interesting places for your players, each with their own npc). They won’t care about that, and I’ve learnt that the hard way. Today I’m going to tell you how to create a city from the ground up with little to no effort. Sounds impossible? It’s actually much easier than it sounds! You know when a magician ...

DM’s toolbox

As a DM, you can approach how you create your universe by using different methods. You take some time (or not) before each of your sessions and prepare something for the players to enjoy. However, even inspired, it may take you quite a lot of time to create the perfect dungeon, city, NPC, a name, or some weird area. For this, and much more, here I’ll list you my intensive list of resources to get stuff from quickly, so you don’t have to carry all the heavy weight from worldbuilding on your shoulders. Encounter building: Kobold’s fight club You need to create some balanced encounters for your players on a whim, or for your next dungeon or session, but don’t want to do math using the CR. Just tell the webpage how many party members there are, which level they are in and start adding monsters to see how difficult the encounter will be for your players, plus the amount of xp they will earn for completing it. Take this with a grain of salt though, as CR isn’t often the best way...

Creating enemy champions on a whim

- Ok, your turn! - *Rolls d20* 17! - Ok, you get to attack the goblin with your longsword - Now it's the goblin’s turn. *Rolls d20* 19 against your AC, which deals damage with her shortsword. Boring, isn't it? Combat is something from d&d that, even though is one of its core part, sometimes feels more of a drag than an actual epic moment. A time when roleplay stops or is heavily diminished and players start worrying about the game mechanics above everything else. This isn't something that happens at every table, but in the few groups I’ve dmed in that I saw this happen pretty often. Monsters do have personalities too! Even the most basic ones. You can act as they would being the DM, but that would make the battles way more of a slog than they should (more so if it's just a little encounter with not much to give to the players) After some thought I created this new concept, which I still have got to try out. Let's say the player misses its first hi...
